How to use PrevTool: complete setup guide & all features explained

1. Install PrevTool

PrevTool is available on the Chrome Web Store and works on Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi, and any Chromium-based browser. Installation takes about 30 seconds.

2. Pin the extension (recommended)

Pinning PrevTool to your toolbar gives you quick access to the extension popup (bulk analysis, account linking, usage display). This step is optional but recommended.

• Click the puzzle icon (Extensions) in your Chrome toolbar.
• Find PrevTool in the list. 
• Click the pin icon next to it. PrevTool's icon will now appear in your toolbar.

3. Three ways to use PrevTool

PrevTool works in three distinct modes depending on where you are and what you need. Each mode has its own set of features.

Workflow A: Hover preview (any webpage)

This is PrevTool's core feature. On any webpage where a Gofile link appears (Reddit, Discord, forums, blogs, etc.), simply hover over the link. A tooltip appears showing:

Note: this feature can be toggled on or off from the extension popup ("Hover preview" toggle). When disabled, hovering won't trigger a preview — useful if you want to save your daily previews and only analyze links manually via the popup.

When enabled, the tooltip shows:

• The folder's file tree (file names, types, sizes)
• Metadata: total files, total size
• Link status: available, dead, or password-protected
• Download buttons for each file
• Thumbnail previews for images and videos

How to download from the tooltip

• Single file: click the download arrow (⬇︎) next to any file to start downloading it.
• Download All: click "Download All" at the top to download every file in the folder at once.

Workflow B: Extension popup (bulk analysis)

Click the PrevTool icon in your toolbar to open the extension popup. The popup gives you access to:

• Bulk analysis Premium: paste multiple Gofile links at once, click "Analyze All", and see the status of every link.
• Usage display: see how many previews you have left today.
• Account linking: paste a link code to connect your Premium account.

Workflow C: On gofile.io directly

When you're on a gofile.io page, PrevTool adds extra functionality directly on the page:

• File selection dialog: select which files you want to download from the folder.
• Download All Free: download every file in the folder in one click — this works for free on gofile.io pages.
• ZIP download: bundle selected files into a ZIP archive and download it.

Free The core feature. Hover any Gofile link on any webpage to see the folder's contents in an inline tooltip. See file names, sizes, types, and status without opening a new tab. Works on Reddit, Discord (web), forums, blogs, and any website.

Direct download & Download All

Free Click the download arrow next to any file in the tooltip to download it directly. No need to open the Gofile page.

Free Bundle multiple files into a single ZIP archive and download it. Available from the hover tooltip (ZIP icon) and from the file selection dialog on gofile.io.

Dead link & password detection

Free PrevTool instantly tells you if a Gofile link is dead (expired, removed) or password-protected — before you click it. No more wasting time opening dead links in new tabs.

Link highlighting

Premium PrevTool automatically scans and color-codes every Gofile link on the page:

Thumbnail previews

Free See image and video thumbnails directly inside the preview tooltip for quick visual identification. Useful when a folder contains many media files and you want to find the right one without downloading them all.

Bulk analysis

Premium Open the extension popup, paste multiple Gofile links (one per line), and click "Analyze All". PrevTool checks every link and shows you a summary: file count, total size, and status (available, dead, or protected) for each.

If you subscribe to Premium, you need to link your extension to your account:

1. Go to prevtool.com/account.html and log in with Google.
2. Subscribe to Premium (monthly or yearly).
3. In the "Link your browser extension" section, click Generate code.
4. Copy the 6-character code.
5. Open the PrevTool popup (click the PrevTool icon in your toolbar).
6. Paste the code in the "Link account" field and confirm.
7. Your extension is now linked. All Premium features are unlocked.

7. Troubleshooting

The tooltip doesn't appear when I hover a Gofile link

• Check that Hover preview is enabled: open the PrevTool popup (click the PrevTool icon in your toolbar) and make sure the "Hover preview" toggle is turned on. When disabled, hovering a Gofile link won't trigger a preview. This option exists so you can save your daily previews and only analyze links manually when you need to.
• Make sure PrevTool is enabled: click the puzzle icon in your toolbar and check that PrevTool is listed and not disabled.
• Try refreshing the page. PrevTool's content script needs to load on the page first.
• Make sure the link is a valid Gofile URL (gofile.io/d/...).

I get a "rate limited" error

Gofile temporarily limits requests if too many are made in a short time. Wait a few seconds and try again. PrevTool respects all Gofile rate limits.

Download All doesn't work on a non-Gofile page

Download All from the hover tooltip (on non-Gofile pages) is a Premium feature. On the free plan, Download All only works when you're on gofile.io directly.

My Premium features aren't showing

• Make sure your extension is linked to your Premium account (see section 6).
• Check that your subscription is active at prevtool.com/account.html.
• Try unlinking and re-linking the extension with a new code.

Frequently asked questions

Does PrevTool work on Discord?

Yes, on the Discord web app (discord.com). PrevTool works on any webpage where Gofile links appear. It does not work on the Discord desktop app (which is not a browser).

Does PrevTool bypass Gofile restrictions?

No. PrevTool does not bypass passwords, quotas, speed limits, or any Gofile restrictions. It is a productivity tool that shows what's inside a Gofile link before you click it. All downloads are served by Gofile.

Is PrevTool safe?

Yes. PrevTool is listed on the Chrome Web Store, which reviews all extensions for safety. PrevTool does not collect personal data, does not inject scripts into Gofile, and uses Shadow DOM to isolate its UI from host pages.

Can I use PrevTool on Firefox?

Not currently. PrevTool is built for Chrome (Manifest V3) and works on all Chromium-based browsers. Firefox support is not available at this time.
